Secrets of a Charmed Life is the story of two sisters, Emmy and Julia. Their lives are completely changed by the evacuation of London’s children right before the blitz on London that began on September 7, 1940.
I love historical fiction and I love WWII history so this story was right up my alley.
At the outset of the story, Emmy is 15 and Julia is 7. Their mother does what she can to make ends meet as a single mother. Emmy has dreams of being a bridal gown designer and gets a part time job working in a bridal shop. All of her dreams seems to come crashing down around her when she and Julia are forced to evacuate London.
All of the decisions that are made in the novel lead to two very different lives for the two girls.
What I love about this novel is the perspective that even though we all make bad decisions, we are not the only ones to blame for what happens. Other people make decisions. Things happen, like war. And God is always at work, no matter what decisions we make.
So many of the decisions we make are based on fear. Fear of not being loved, fear of not achieving our dreams, fear of the consequences of our decisions.
This is a fantastic novel that will make you think. It will make you questions your own decisions. You will look at your mistakes, your successes, your life, your family, all in a different way.
