The First State of Being by Erin Entrada Kelly
4.0

Michael is a 12 year old kid living with a lot of worry in August 1999. Y2K is right around the corner and he’s determined to make sure his mom is taken care of when everything is set to crash January 1, 2000.

His world is turned upside down well before January 1st when Ridge, a boy a few years older than Michael, appears from 200 years into the future.

This title just won the Newbury Medal. And it has some golden moments in it. When everything came full circle, I got goosebumps.

Really a fun read for anyone 10 and up.

“I know it doesn’t seem glamorous or interesting to you right now but that’s because no one realizes they’re living history every minute of every day. Sure there are big moments… But the truth is, we’re making history at this very moment… Every breath we take, we’re contributing to history.”

“Who knows why people do the things they do. Maybe he felt threatened because she’s smarter than him. People with walnut-sized brains are afraid of smart people— especially smart women… It’s not your job to figure out why walnut-brained people do walnut-brained things. It’s your job to make sure you don’t become one of those people…

You know what my mama used to say? ‘Before you go to sleep at night ask yourself: was I the best person I could be today?’ If the answer is no, do better tomorrow.”
