Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock
4.0

The other Elric stories (besides his 'end') were somewhat disappointing for me, in part because Michael Moorcock completely hits it out of the park with the thunderous opening volley of "The Dreaming City." The apex of pulp fiction and dark fantasy, with strong social commentary, tragic heroes that aren't really heroes, self-destructive quests with questionable goals and even more questionable outcomes, and a fantastic world in irreversible, self-induced decline.

It's no surprise that modern fantasy owes so much to Elric and his doomed travels.
