The Emperor of Gladness by Ocean Vuong
5.0

A love letter to struggles and beauties that contour American life. Vuong’s sophomore novel is just as epic as it is intimate, each page pulsing with life and tenderness. The pace forces you to spend time with the characters in a real and raw way, and the lyrical language lives in a Goldilocks zone of being prevalent, but not so much so as to take away from the grounded character individuality and cathartic humor that propel this novel above Vuong’s debut. This book is special. I truly can’t recommend it enough.
