The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri
5.0

10/10 : I’m going to quote from the blurb to start this review, it perfectly surmises what I feel: “moving, compassionate and beautifully written” ... “a powerful testament to the triumph of the human spirit”. Nuri, a beekeeper, & his wife Afra, an artist, are fleeing their home in Aleppo, after unspeakable loss, & trying to find their way to a new life, following in the footsteps of Mustafa, a cousin of Nuri. As you would perhaps expect from a tale of a refugees journey to safety, there is a great deal of fear, of loss, of peril, but above all, hope, that a better life will prevail. The author, Christy, is a child of Cypriot refugees, & wrote this book after spending time volunteering at a UNICEF centre in Athens, almost as a collective tale heard from many voices. The way Christy writes about the feelings & experiences of Nuri & Afra, along with others they meet, is so evocative, so haunting, & with such vivid depth of feeling. I was completely engrossed in this novel, & felt so buoyed by the genuine hope that remained, it unites us all, it makes us human.
