The Demon Queer Saga by S.J. Whitby

adventurous dark emotional funny tense fast-paced

TL;DR: The series has embraced full comicbook chaos (sometimes to its detriment), but the characters and beliefs save the day

Volume 3 is by far the messiest entry (in more ways than one), but even amidst the chaos, it manages to be something special. I cannot say that this feels like a particularly polished book - there are so many characters and plot threads that are being juggled haphazardly, and there were some weird moments and even errors - but I find myself not caring too much. The superhero action, when it does work, is spectacular, but for me it has always been the characters that matter, and the real emotional core of this one is Dylan, Dani, and the war against homophobia and despair. I could wish for a bit more development with other characters, but the central duo, their romance, and their struggles with morality (as these books edge towards grimdark) are enough to make my heart swell even when I don't think the writing itself is at its best.
