House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski

5.0

If you manage to finish House of Leaves you'll probably love it or hate it (if you stop reading, then you probably end up hating it). Anyway, there are 3 narratives layered in this story, first there is protagonist Johnny Truant, an assistant in a tattoo parlor who moves into an apartment owned by a deceased blind man named Zampanò. Second is the 'Navidson Record', a paper written by Zampanò, discussing a documentary about a photojournalist. Truant discovers this paper, but cannot find evidence that the documentary ever really existed. Finally is the story in the Navidson Record, which is the story of the the Navidson family having moved into a house only discover that the house is bigger inside than it is out.

The book takes off as Johnny begins to read the Navidson Record, and jumps back and forth between the different narratives. There is something sinister about the house, and as Johnny continues reading, his own life begins to come apart.

If you are considering reading the book, flip through it at the bookstore, that is what sold me on it, the unique use of the page.

And read the footnotes.
