I guess we finally get to the twist at the end of this book. Except it isn't all that surprising, so it lands more with a thud. I did figure out what this series reminded me the most of. It isn't Abercrombie or Song of Ice and Fire. It actually reminds me the most of Wheel of Time, with Corban as super-boring Rand (complete with Dath and Farrell as ersatz Mat and Perrin) and Gar as the Lan sword mentor. Meical and Brinna both stand-in for Moiraine and the plotline of evil servants trying to pry open a hole in the world to let the Dark One in does seem very familiar. The same sprawling POVs and world spanning political plot lines. It is just nowhere near as well done. Just one more to go.
