The Death of Democracy: Hitler's Rise to Power and the Downfall of the Weimar Republic
by Benjamin Carter Hett
A surprisingly informative book; just when you think there is nothing more to say about Hitler’s rise to power, Hett proves you wrong. I had been familiar with the globalization context in which Hett frames the rise of the Nazis, but he goes all the way with it, developing it in a way that feels relevant to our own time. The writing itself is to be commended as well; Hett is surprisingly able to squeeze so much background and history in less than 300 pages. One gripe to admit is that the book’s beginning does not feel as promising, as it might feel like regurgitation. Thankfully, the writing elevates this problem long enough to carry you into the parts that are genuinely interesting.
