How Dare the Sun Rise: Memoirs of a War Child by Sandra Uwiringiyimana, Abigail Pesta

4.5

As a child, I witnessed the unthinkable: I saw my sister murdered before my eyes because of discrimination and hate. But I have learned that if we want to change the world, we can't harden our hearts and shut ourselves off from other cultures.

We must open up our hearts. We must not fall prey to the kind of thinking that separates us.”

The author wrote this memoir to share her own voice as a refugee and survivor of the Gatumba massacre. It’s a moving story of perseverance, as the author battles the horror of the massacre and moving to a the USA which means a loss of community and new struggles.
