The Last Guy Breathing
by Skylar M. Cates
Well this was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, for the MCs and reader alike.
Locke, for me, is one of those characters you live to hate and it took a while for him to grow on me as he doesn't come across very nicely at first. There's no denying the chemistry he shares with Henry and the simmering tension between them, both good and bad, throughout the story. Both men have turbulent histories, especially their childhoods which continue to impact their lives today. They are brought together in an official capacity to work on a fraud case that also involves the death of a woman and it has them simultaneously at odds with each other and wanting to be as close as possible.
The case that they work on is quite good with some red herrings and a lot of guessing as to who is behind it all. The relationship aspect is hard fought and though they somewhat easily fall into bed together, it takes so much more for them to take steps towards being anything more to each other. It's good catching up with some previous characters, Anthony and Dean, the Carrino family. Then there is drama in their family lives as well that brings both men added stress.
Overall, there is a lot going on to keep up with but it's a relationship that clearly works for them both, when they allow it that is as they're both happy and falling for each other. Allowing themselves that happiness, however, is a whole different thing.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
