I could not put this book down--between reading sessions I couldn't help but wonder at the next twist. This was a fantastic gothic horror with just the right pacing, not too much gore (in my opinion, others might disagree),, and a deeply compelling cast of characters. Li uses an inventive gothic setting to explore the costs of personal ambition, intergenerational trauma, sisterly ties and dynamics, queer longing, and so much more. Great for people looking for something mysterious with a multigenerational narrative at play. Easily one of my favorite books of the year so far!
Graphic: Death, Domestic abuse, Gore, Homophobia, Grief, Car accident, Murder, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Suicide
