I didn't know much about this book going in and I came with no expectations. It surprised me in many ways and I don't think I would've chosen it had I known the synopsis or plot beforehand but I'm glad I did read it. It's beautifully written and captures well the emotions and feelings of the character. The book is very character based and I don't often go for that but I thought it was very well executed here, it's a stunning portrait of a person and those around her; I could truly imagine Marin being a real girl. The writing was beautiful and poetic and the descriptions will stay in my head for a long time, particularly of the beach scene. It reminded me of The Sea Is Salt and So Am I (although I heavily prefer this to that) in terms of mood and writing style. I loved the characterizing of Marin and Mabel in the little things they did like Jane Eyre and nail polish and their plans and I found that to be very truthful to the experience of human connection. The character development was also phenomenal and well written. I thought the message was executed well and not too 'in your face' and I think that while this book may not be for those who enjoyed fast paced and plot driven works it is worth reading and I did take something away from the experience of reading it.
