Kiki's Delivery Service by Eiko Kadono
4.0

A quick and charming read—absolutely one I’d recommend to young readers! The book differs quite a bit from Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved film, especially in pacing and plot. While the same characters appear, the novel takes a more episodic approach, and Miyazaki definitely streamlined the story in ways that work better for film.

The story follows Kiki through the ups and downs of her first year living on her own, as she learns to trust in herself and her abilities. Most of the plot is driven by the quirky and often silly delivery jobs she takes on, with time passing naturally in the background.

There’s a lot of lighthearted goofiness that younger readers will find especially entertaining. As an adult—and someone who grew up watching the movie—I can see why many of these smaller stories didn’t make it into the adaptation.

Overall, this was a sweet and enjoyable read, full of warmth and gentle lessons.
