3.5

I give this 3.5/5 stars just based on the entertainment value of the last 150 pages.

This is a nice, light read with a simple epic fantasy plot. I saw a great deal of hype about this book when it was released, but I’m not sure it deserved all of that. The prose is good, but there are several plot holes that were a bit frustrating and the plot was very linear, similar to a mystery or thriller, that I did not expect. In addition, the main character starts out as a bit of a slacker and does not seem to grow very much by the end. This story arc wrapped up nicely and the next book is set up for another adventure in a different city in the world. I have high hopes for it based on the end of this one.

I did love the interaction between the main character, Lukan, and a couple of the side characters, Flea and Ashra. Several of the characters make appearances for one or two chapters and are not heard from again. Perhaps we will see some of them again.
