Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination
by Toni Morrison
Swoon. I'm not one for literary criticism (too many memories of reading articles about Faulkner in high school) but Toni Morrison, of course, knocks this one out of the park. The idea of Africanism, at least the way Toni Morrison articulated it, was new to me but so well elucidated and substantiated. I'd recommend this book for the Hemingway analyses alone and hope that this is the kind of literary criticism folx in school are getting these days.
