Lost Stars
by Claudia Gray
This would have been a 4/5 stars, but the scene that lowered it to 3 was after Thane had come to support her family during the trial, and fucking Ciena STILL wouldn’t desert because of “honor.” Girl, at some fucking point, you realize that the “oath” you took and the “honor” you have to uphold for the Empire is no longer worth it. This was that point - the final nail in the coffin that should have made her defect. I get what Gray was trying to get at - leaving the Empire, while also coming from a culture that values honor above all else, isn’t an easy thing to do. I get it, I do, and I loved that about the book for the first 2/3rds of it. But, it felt like she was just keeping Ciena in the Empire so she could finish off having the book span through the OT and the Battle of Jakku. It wasn’t necessary. I don’t know, maybe I’m just being cranky and expected something different lol. Still a great story, and I loved how it spanned these two characters lives from childhood until the Battle of Jakku - it was fun to follow them through huge, coming-of-age moments!! Just, _damn_, Ciena lmao
