Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Jean Greaves, Travis Bradberry

3.0

Emotional Intelligence 2.0 is primarily a list of tips and strategies that you can use to improve your emotional intelligence. It's broken into 4 sections (self-awareness strategies, self-management strategies, social awareness strategies, and relationship management strategies). Each section gives 15 to 17 ways that you can work to improve the given area of emotional intelligence and these strategies seem reasonable to me, so I'm giving it 3 starts because I think it's a solid resource.

The reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that the book wants you to take a test to see how your emotional intelligence stacks up, but they don't let just anyone take the test. Each new copy of the book gets a single code that's good for 2 tests, both of which you're supposed to use for yourself. Take it once when you first get the book and then again when you feel like you've improved some. Yet the book also tells you that you must constantly work on these skills because you can lose them over time. You're even told to revisit the book once a year. You're also encouraged to have others take the test to see how they rank because this will help you find mentors. Yet the test is hidden away with no way to access it outside of book codes. I tried to google an alternative way to take the test and there isn't one. You must have a book code for every two tests you want to take.

In other words, you have to keep buying copies of the book. You can't even buy this and have you and a romantic partner or friend work on it together. You both have to get copies of the book.

It's such a cash-grab gimmick that I can't give this 5 stars, though I do think reading through the strategies and thinking about them can help someone improve their skills.
