It is your average childhood story. This is a re-read for me, and nostalgia does make this book so much better. It's a great story with so much personality, exploring the themes of friendship and isolation; a message that is needed now more than ever, the world being so separated. I enjoyed re-reading and can't wait to continue the series.
The main reason I gave three stars is because it's nothing special. At the end of the day, it's just a children's story, and it's not the best of the set. You can tell it's early work, the writing not always as tight as it could be. But I know that will improve as the story goes on.
