October 2023:

I will have to come back to this review as it’s hard to put my thoughts together on this book.

This is an odd duck of a book - it’s deceptively simple but pretty complicated under the surface. Pretty weird and hurt my head. But it was still worth it in the end - very odd reading experience for me.

I would’ve given this 3.75 stars - 3 stars for the slow star which kept me at arms length (yes it was deliberate and showed a lot of craft but I still didn’t click with it). And then 4 stars for the banger of a second half. Because the second half is so strong in my head I am rounding it up.

Despite the trappings of an adventure tale this is a much more complicated tale of intrigue and betrayal- sprinkled in with musing on chaos and change. Along with a really weird answer love story - which I naturally loved as well.

So I promised myself I’d read Jemisin this year and I’ve decided to read in publication order - also because I want to save the 5th Season
