The Isle of the Lost
by Melissa de la Cruz
So imagine all the Disney villains from all the Disney stories are exiled on one little island. All these villains also have children in training to be the evilest of the bunch. What could go wrong?
This book was just plain fun! It's a prequel to the Disney channel movie, Descendants, which I watched right after reading this book. The movie by the way, is a mix of High School Musical and Once Upon a Time. Super cheesy and cute and it reminded me of the classic DCOMs from my childhood and damn if it didn't have some catchy songs in it.
The Isle of the Lost is a great set up for the movie. The book introduces Mal, daughter of Maleficent; Jay, son of Jafar; Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen; and Carlos, son of Cruella De Vil. Yes, the names are all that close to the parents. And for some reason, they all only have a single parent instead of villains mixing together to have children... They live on the Isle of the Lost, never to leave and have to live on scraps and leftovers. The world is still pretty modern though, kind of shockingly so.
After some pranks and a mysterious accident that causes a hole for a second in the magic barrier that holds the isle prison, Maleficent sends her daughter to her old castle to find her magic staff. Mal wants to prove herself to her mother, and Jay, Evie, and Carlos want to prove themselves to their parents as well. Along the way, they go through trials and slowly become friends, or as close to friends as a group of kids raised to be evil can be.
Basically this book is fun, and a bit silly. It's not something that you need to take seriously but instead enjoy the ride and mentions of all the Disney characters that we all know and love.
Also despite the characters ages, it's more middle grade, or for younger teens rather than the young adult it gets shelved as.

Who wanted to make lemonade from lemons, when you could make perfectly good lemon grenades?
