Wonder by R.J. Palacio
5.0

I could not put this book down, except for the handful of times I was crying and couldn't see the words on the page. "Wonder" makes me want to "be kinder than necessary" to everyone. I was taken aback when I realized that some chapters wouldn't be from Auggie's perspective and I really loved how it enriched the story. I was also surprised that that the adults didn't have their own chapters, but then remembered this is a YA book. And by the end, I didn't need to know exactly what Auggie's parents were feeling, as the author did such a superb job writing from the children's observations. My copy had the Julian chapter included and it was interesting to get the "other side". As much as I liked it, especially his Grandmere's experiences during Nazi occupied France, I think it deviated too far from the original story. Maybe the author could have put in Julian chapters throughout the novel to try to explain why he was a bully. Even so, it was such a great reading experience.
