The Lonely Hearts Book Club

DNF at 80%
Initially I was really enjoying this; I was surprised by it. I was a bit frustrated that everyone around Sloane (eg her boss, her fiancés family) mistreated her, acted inappropriately and had no sense of boundaries and Sloane basically ate a shit sandwich happily. I thought perhaps this yellow belly Pollyanna would grow a spine or realize all of these people don’t actually care about her or love her or respect her but she still hasn’t at 80%
Around 30% I was starting to get a little annoyed with all the overly convenient things happened… plus they stopped reading books. I enjoyed that part, listening to them discuss books.
by 50% I realized this book was formulaic—it was following the same formula as many other books like it in a genre. Yet I still liked several characters so I kept on…
Around 69% the story started to have an agenda, this annoying you have to forgive your mom, moms should be worshipped, there are no bad white moms, forgive your mom, she loves you!
Which #1 umm no. There are plenty of bad moms, even white ones and it is 100% okay (and healthy) to be mad about it or choose not to forgive or choose to not be in contact, etc.
#2 “she did her best” also isn’t a carte blanch.
I got really REALLY tired of the Matteo story around his mom and that garbage drama
By 80% the book has lost my interest completing. Anything interesting or compelling has left. The book is now too long and too convoluted. I am tired of being in a self discovery childhood trauma therapy session with every character. Perhaps I’ve just read too many other books like this one already.
Bottom line: cute but boring. A good book for a “feel good” read.
