A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians by H.G. Parry
5.0
This is a fabulous novel. It’s the best kind of historical fantasy—a story deeply rooted in history and which breathes life into historical characters (William Pitt, Maximilien de Robespierre, Toussaint Louverture) that I’d only ever read about in a textbook. This is a novel of the French and Haitian Revolutions, told primarily through the political dealings of those involved in England, France, and Haiti, with the twist that magic is a real and established part of the world and the right to practice it was the catalyst of revolution in conjunction with the struggle for freedom from monarchy and slavery.
You know a novel is good when a story about revolution is told primarily through conversation, and it’s absolutely captivating. Loved this one.
