The Heart Goes Last
by Margaret Atwood
Man, did I love the beginning of this book. Financial collapse dystopia, plus a pair of plucky newlyweds living out of their car? I'm in. And the set-up for Consilience is interesting, too -- if a bit forced.
But then it just spirals out so spectacularly: sexbots and a sea of Elvises and a woman who has a procedure done to her brain where she falls in love with a knit bear... I don't know, it just wasn't my cup of tea. Furthermore, I wasn't rooting for Stan or Charmaine; they were both as despicable as the mustache-twisting Villain at the head of it all.
If you're in the market for dystopian spec fic, skip this and pick up The Handmaid's Tale instead.
