Scythe
by Neal Shusterman
3.5
Want to preface this by saying that I took a while to read this book because I've been so busy so that may have impacted my enjoyment a bit.
I thought that the premise of this was so interesting - a dystopian world in which death has been beaten and now lies within the hands of people known as scythes. The requirement to become a scythe is to not want to be one which brings it a lot of interesting moral issues. The book follows two main characters, Citra and Rowan, who are both apprentices to the same scythe for their training. I liked them both but I gravitated towards Citra more just because I thought she was a bit more fleshed out. I felt like I didn't know much about Rowan's life before becoming an apprentice so I struggled to connect with him. I did like how he changed throughout the book though.
The plot has a mystery element to it which I liked but I did think that there were some pacing issues with how everything happened. The little diary snippets throughout were nice and helped to build out the world. I thought the ending was well done and I liked how the situation was handled but I'm unsure as to whether I'll continue with the series.
