A short book but really well written and packing a punch. The narrator is journeying from Belfast to Sunderland by car through a landscape covered by snow to pick up his student son who is stranded in digs far from home. The storyline focuses on the events and practicalities of the trip but particularly explores the mindset and family history of the driver. It cleverly rolls out the tragic difficulties he and his family have had to face. The gradual exposure of the dark ‘secret’ at the centre of his pain is handled wonderfully. A book of rare quality and startling intensity.
