There’s definitely something here — the multi-generational epic family drama, the vibrant characters, the cultural specificity, the history of tyranny in the Dominican Republic…
But this guy writes like a little boy who just learned about sex and swear words yesterday. The demeaning way he describes women (every single woman by the way, not one emerges unscathed from his lewd, dehumanizing gaze) makes me want to puke. All his nerd references might have seemed fresh in 2007, but in 2024 they are cliché and, frankly, excruciating.
A frustrating read. I can’t recommend it to most people in good conscience.
