Lord of the Last Heartbeat by May Peterson

5.0

I gulped this book down like mid-winter peppermint hot chocolate: comforting, lush, with a touch of headiness that somehow manages not to be too heavy and makes me wish there was a little bit more left. (This somewhat overstretched metaphor makes more sense when it is noted that peppermint hot chocolate is my favorite drink in the world and, as far as I'm concerned, the epitome of beverage perfection).

This book is a jumble of things that seemingly shouldn't work, or should be too much, but somehow work together magnificently: post-war fantasy world, romance, race-against-the-clock murder mystery, coming of age, bear-spirit and cat-spirit quasi-vampires, sung sorcery, a magic-wielding mafia family, curses, and ghosts of the murderous variety.

This book is rich and lovely and tender and so very full, and I can't help but feel sad that I inhaled it in a day and a half instead of making it stretch a bit more (but I am fully aware that I'll probably do the exact same thing to the next book in the series).
