Pros: Mary Renault is a wonderful writer and brings life into a segment of society that was fun to read about - that is, a bunch of bisexual polyamorous bohemians living in London in the 1930’s. The characters are flawed but lovable.
Cons: the ending, which Renault herself seemed to dislike in her afterward. For such a lighthearted book it was ambiguous and sad.
Cons: the ending, which Renault herself seemed to dislike in her afterward. For such a lighthearted book it was ambiguous and sad.
Minor: Racial slurs, Sexual content, Toxic relationship, and Lesbophobia
There is a racial slur with is used as an adjective but not about actual people of color. I’m a bit surprised this was never revised in later editions because it has such little bearing on the book.
