The Boyfriend Candidate
by Ashley Winstead
There was so much to love about this book! Alexis was a clearly written and fully fleshed-out person of her own. She had motivations, thoughts, ideas, struggles, and all of them were portrayed realistically and empathetically. She was undoubtedly the best part of this book.
I really enjoyed that this book didn't shy away from describing political aspects and events. Sometimes those can be handwaved away in the interest of focusing more on the Romance, but the addition of that depth made this a much more interesting and nuanced read.
Unfortunately, less of that nuance was present in the depiction of this book's side characters and a few of the plot developments. Zoey in particular felt like a one-note character who only popped up when Alexis was going through a crisis. Lee was a terribly thoughtless and horribly inconsiderate human being.
Some of the decisions made by a few characters (Lee in particular) were just so god-awfully idiotic that my suspension of disbelief flew out the window and I had to put the book down to take a moment to physically cringe.
The highs of this book were so high! The lows were so low! An enjoyable read overall but it's also hard to overlook the negative aspects. 3/5.
