Critical: Stories from the front line of intensive care medicine by Matt Morgan

emotional informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

4.5

What an amazing read it was! Before I say anything else, I'd say that it's a must read for everyone, specially those with a medicine background.
Dr. Morgan has done a lovely job in capturing the essence of stories in medicine, and linking it up with the science behind them in a very palatable way. The book is divided into 8 sections, each about an organ system with the content being a real life patient's story relating to it. The stories are heart touching, real and simplified so anyone, even without a medicine background, can understand what goes behind the scenes in a healthcare setting. His discussions on the sociopolitical landscape of medicine is very insightful as well. Reading it as a doctor myself, I thoroughly enjoyed and related to each and every page, and in a lot of ways, got more inspired for the work I do. Really loved the historical context of common medical ailments, procedures or groundbreaking treatment discoveries, too. The storytelling, the narrative and the effort of presenting the jagroned medical world in an easily understandable way is commendable. Really loved it! A great read overall. So glad I came across it randomly in my neighborhood's bookshop. ❤️
