Dark August by Katie Tallo

Alas ... the mysteries were too engaging for me to want to stop reading, but the whole thing fell apart into a messy tangle at the end. And on the way through, I was repeatedly frustrated by a) the protagonist being super dense about things I had already figured out, and b) the author seemingly expecting the reader to ALSO be dense, and spelling things out unnecessarily after what would otherwise have been excellent use of inference, thereby interrupting the flow of her story. Basically, there was lots of potential here and some excellent use of ominous foreshadowing, but it needed heavy editing and probably several rewrites of the dénouement. Boo.
