“I think that perhaps there’s just something especially beautiful in two people who always believed that they needed to be the sacrifice, learning how to actively want life, and learning how to fight for it – not just for each other, but also for themselves.” - Carissa Broadbent, Author’s Note for The Fallen & the Kiss of Dusk.
I do not say this lightly - This might be the best book I have ever read in my life, even surpassing her other series, the love of my life, War of Lost Hearts.
I SOBBED. A. Lot. I laughed - the banter is top tier and had me laughing out loud multiple times. Mische is such a special, complex character. And she’s very funny, even when there are world ending circumstances around them. It’s very intense and dark and throughout the book, I genuinely had no idea how on earth it could ever get better for them because it’s just that well written.
I feel like I was highlighting passages every other page because there is just so much to love about this book. You’re gonna suffer, but you’re gonna be happy about it.
I will hopefully write a more in depth review later (no promises). But I will leave you with this: it is a phenomenal dark fantasy romance.(Emphasis on the dark) with complex, nuanced characters who are fully developed and have lives outside of their love of the romantic interests. It’s creepy, delves into horror, emotional, full of funny quips, hot sex, and maybe a moment or two that made me think “Avengers…assemble!” So be sure to read all the previous books first.
This is a masterpiece from start to finish. Infinity stars. I already grieve the person I was reading this for the first time because I will never get to experience it quite that way again. (As an aside, for maximum feels, I do recommend listening to my Crowns of Nyaxia playlist on Spotify because it feels that much more immersive and emotional when the music matches the tone. It definitely enhanced my reading experience.)
Thank you to Carissa for sending me the ARC, putting up with my live texting you my many, many reactions and tears, and the mention in the acknowledgements. It made me sob even more.
