TW: Parental abuse, loads of gore (this is about serial killers), cannibalism, sexual abuse (mentioned), VERY detailed sex scenes, and more...you should definitely check out the whole list the author states in the book, audiobook and on her website. Did I heed these warnings? Of course not (SMH!)
I thought this was going to be just a fun little Dexter like fluffy romance and don't get me wrong it was that but things got way more filthy than I thought they were. And I can't say it's anyone's fault but my own since it's right there in the trigger warnings. I'm just a dummy and didn't let it sink in until Joe Arden was whispering in my ear to "TASTE IT!" lmao oh god this was so dirty but I still enjoyed it.
Sloane Sutherland is the Orb Weaver, a serial killer who kills other serial killers. She's most known for plucking out the eyeballs of her victims and stringing together "webs" of their various body parts. She's alone in her life except for her BFF Lark whom she saved many years ago from being abused by her professor. Rowan is a chef and restaurant owner by day and a killer by night, going after Boston's worst of the worst. He stumbles upon Sloane one day discovering her locked in a cage with the decomposing body of his next target. They eventually work out a plan to have a yearly game of who can catch and kill a target but of course they fall for one another a long the way.
I found Sloane and Rowan's chemistry pretty electric, even with Rowan's instalust. They are two peas in a pod each searching desperately for acceptance and to be loved. I loved the show Dexter and this kind of had the same mantra of taking out bad people so I didn't really feel icky about them killing people...they were the worst sort of people! The author knows how to pull the feelings out and there were loads of emotional scenes between the two mains and I teared up several times. The only nit pick I would really say I had was the instalove and the twist towards the end...I don't think it was believable after so long and I was just a bit meh about it.
I will say the audiobook was phenomenal, if I could give it a million stars I would. It was a dual narration by Joe Arden and Lucy Rivers and they were AMAZING! It was a dual narration like I've never heard before though, instead of alternating chapters POVs it was done by character dialogue. Each time Rowan said something Joe narrated and each time Sloane said something Lucy narrated no matter if it was in the other's POV. It was really neat and unique, I need more of this style! Also, Joe Arden is the champion of the sexy whisper...good lord.
Overall really enjoyable book with loads of dark fun, comedy, and sexiness...I will most definitely continue the series!
