The Strangers by Katherena Vermette
3.0

3.5/5 stars. The writing, themes and character development in this book are really superb, this book does a great job of exploring inter generational trauma amongst a strong group of Métis women. I really enjoyed Cedar’s character and story in particular. I do feel like this book would have benefitted from more cohesion between the storylines and some additional detail in certain parts. For example, the book never tells you which city it is set in, or why Phoenix is incarcerated. The timelines were also confusing, especially with Margaret’s character, along with the relationships between characters. I was under the impression this book was separate from the author’s previous book, The Break, with some character overlap, but based on my experience only reading The Strangers, I think it would be helpful to read The Break first.
