i really hate to pit girlies against each other but i enjoyed Danez Smith’s HOMIE more than this. i think queerness adds a certain je ne sais quoi to poetry that this collection just didn’t have (i wanna say jk but i’m really not tbh.)

using AAVE in a lyrical way, Marshall explores themes of race, class, gentrification, and more. i listened to this collection and i think that made it hit different than if i had, like, read it with my eyes. it made it feel like spoken word and i just always feel like i can connect to poetry more when i hear the poet reading it. it was a fine collection and i’m happy that i listened to it, though i don’t see myself returning to it.
