Lord of the Last Heartbeat by May Peterson
4.0

I really enjoyed the utterly beautiful world that May Peterson has created here. There is/are all sorts of court intrigue, magical creatures, more dead than living characters, an evil mother (!) who nevertheless is ridiculously compelling, the magic of music, and just straight up magic.

I wanted to rant and rave sing this book from the rooftops, but in the end, I had a hard time connecting with one of the two main characters: Mio. I think it might be an it's not you it's me thing, but I could never develop a strong mental image of the character and it kept pulling me out of the book. I liked him, I could just never see him properly.

But the world that it is set in? Absolutely stunning. The fantastical set of characters? Charming and delightful and surprisingly evil (in a good way). In so many ways this book ticks all my boxes, and I view my inability to connect with Mio as a failure on my part, not the author's.

And I am frankly looking forward to the next book in the series, which apparently features a dove shifter, which I have to admit is exciting even if I hate irl doves.
