Loki: Where Mischief Lies by Mackenzi Lee

2.0

I GOT PLAYED, BIG TIME

The internet, when this book came out: “oh my god this is gay and genderqueer rights, this is everything, wow iconic”

The actual book: “there’s literally a two-sentence exchange where any mention of genderqueerness or being bigender is mentioned, and I guess Loki is sort of bi here but there’s really only one extremely tentative gay kiss and some yearning”

Like... woof I dunno guys I’m just tired. I mean, physically because it’s 12:48 am BST, but also emotionally.

ALSO, I feel like there was so much potential here with like... hmm. Striking a balance between “Loki has self growth” and “Loki still has to be a trickster chaotic presence” and it makes me really sad that we ended with “Loki is bitter and never gets to be happy, not even for a minute.” I guess some people like that sort of thing??? But to me I’d rather things be bittersweet. A balance is good!!!!
