I wanted to read something lighthearted — but that doesn’t mean without substance. This book was supposed to help me out of a reading slump. Spoiler: it didn’t.
Everything felt surface-level. The character development was flat, and most interactions felt staged and unnatural. The plot idea was there, but the execution felt stiff and awkward. Maybe it was rushed? There’s a scene where Wren learns something significant about the inspector-love-interest (sorry, I already forgot his name), and she forgives him within two sentences. Her internal monologue basically goes: “I need him, he’s nice and hot. So never mind.” Excuse me, what???
I figured out who did it very early on (and I’m usually not good at guessing). I was okay with that, since I picked this up for something cozy and fun — but without any real charm, emotion, or amusing banter, there just wasn’t much left. I regret buying this book. I should’ve taken the hint when I saw my library didn’t carry it.
