Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

2.0

Elantris is Sanderson's first novel, and boy does it show. It's not bad, and certainly better than many books I've begun. However, it was fairly lackluster beyond the initial premise of the Elantrians.

If I were not so invested in the Cosmere, I would have stopped about a third of the way in, I think. It just didn't have much to bring to the table to get me interested, unfortunately. The magic system is vaguely presented and honestly pretty uninteresting (especially compared to the excellent alternatives in his later books) and felt almost unnecessary.

If you are truly looking for the entirety of the Cosmere experience, I think it's worthwhile, but just barely. Sanderson has come so far from his Elantrian roots.
