Worth Dying For: The Power and Politics of Flags
by Tim Marshall
ive been in a reading slump and i think this book caused it.
i generally enjoyed the first third of the book but it's almost as if the writing slacked once he started exploring non-western countries. there was also a heavy bias and an almost dislike against islam (especially in the flags of fear chapter, marshall claimed to not want to single out islam but then proceeded to do so???). most of the discussions about post colonial countries were surrounding the white colonisers and their impact on the flag rather than the actual country itself and their attitudes and resistance, which i found weird. there were unnecessary jokes about certain people or demographics or even the way their flag is laid out, it was just very unserious whilst trying to explain politics and human geography
i actually enjoyed the content of this book and the analysis of flags was well done but it wasn't executed well, if the strength of the writing about the usa and britain was carried on throughout the african and latin american countries then it would've been okay
