Great and Horrible News: Murder and Mayhem in Early Modern Britain by Blessin Adams
5.0
4.5 stars
Every so often I think about how oddly macabre it is that we just casually teach children about people being hung drawn and quartered. Fun times.
Anyway, this was a great little book that does what it says on the tin, murder and mayhem in early modern Britain, mostly specifically the seventeenth century. I especially appreciated the historical context given about relevant contemporary attitudes, the chapter about miscarriages of unwed mothers being treated as murder was especially interesting and feels depressingly relevant to today.
Content note for cruelty to both animals and children. The midwife chapter especially was pretty damn horrifying.
