These Hollow Vows
by Lexi Ryan
Hmmmm, I'm kind of disappointed overall. The content of this book is definitely YA (it even sometimes starts to be a little adult), but the writing feels so juvenile that a 4th grader could easily read this.
My biggest gripe with this book is the main character, Brie. She is a very typical, very annoying YA MC that thinks "she's not like other girls" and "she's plain and not pretty". Not to mention how much she insists she understands how terrible the world and people are, but still falls for every trick and deception. So much of this story is progressed through others. Brie does little to move things forward and it's exhausting for her to insist how independent she is when she cannot accomplish anything on her own. I did not like reading this book through her perspective.
I do not mind love triangles, they keep me on my toes and often allow for more romance content overall. This was SO POORLY DONE THOUGH. She is already head over heals in love with the initial love interest before the story even starts. So conveniently (minor spoilers ahead), he has also been in love with her the whole time! The second love interest (not a spoiler, just a fact) hardly gets a fighting chance. Honestly did not even realize I was reading a love triangle unfold until I was 80% done with the book. This book is a little ✨spicy✨ though so that was a nice surprise.
This book gets 3 stars simply because it sticks to the troupes and plotlines that I always enjoy. Nothing terribly unique happens in this book and I found the ending to be wildly predictable, but regardless these are the kinds of stories I inherently enjoy. With that being said, this is on the lower end of the spectrum for me.
