Bound by Vengeance by Cora Reilly

This book brings up the old-school gangster vibes I've been looking for all along: poverty-stricken neighborhoods, dark alleys, graffiti covered walls, old residents, dangerous tatted people. Except for the bad writing and a few questionable decisions made by the characters, I rather enjoyed this book. Modern day captor-captive romance set in the mafia world with a whole lot of dynamics and occasional unrest between underbosses of different cities.

Cara is raised to be a proper lady, promised in marriage to the most eligible social elite to uphold her family's honor. Her father's betrayal to his underboss cost him his life and also her family's freedom, so she gets handed over to the underboss's most lethal henchman as a gift. People call him 'Growl', the bastard son of a prostitute, the man behind all his boss's dirty work. He is incapable of feeling anything and prefers solitude that helps keep his monsters at bay, until her. Girls like Cara were never meant for someone like him, it was only her worst punishment that landed her at his feet but he can't deny that the girl who was supposed to warm his bed, has warmed her way into his cruel heart. Cara cared for him even when she thought she was trying to get on his good side to escape her fate, even when her insides burned with hatred towards him and everyone responsible for her father's death. She didn’t know if it was possible to save someone who was too far gone by the horrors of his life. Everything about him felt wrong, then how can something so wrong feel so right? Torn between her conflicts and desperation to save her family, Cara decides to sacrifice the possibility of being with the man she has grown to love.
