Flash and Bones by Kathy Reichs
3.0
I rarely write it in these reviews, I think, but this is a book whose first sentence will pull you in and leave you convinced that you need to finish it. I was a bit sleepy when I started this, but that sentence flung sleep into another universe for a while.
A flash of lightning illuminates the hand of the body buried in the landfill adjacent to the racetrack in Charlotte. Concealed in a barrel, the corpse has been there for years. But whose body is it? And why is the FBI so intensely interested in Dr. Temperance Brennan’s results?
Soon after the body is found, Brennan is contacted by a member of a racing crew who asks her to help uncover the disappearance of his sister and her boyfriend in the late ‘90s. Indeed, he wonders whether the body recently unearthed is that of his sister’s boyfriend. It isn’t, but you need to read the book for the fascinating details.
It seems that the young woman and her boyfriend who disappeared in the late ‘90s were part of a white supremacist group. Most people assumed the couple had simply disappeared to marry and live off the grid somewhere. But her brother always believed otherwise. When he is crushed to death in what appears to be a race car accident, Temperance realizes even her life could be endangered.
This is a gripping story of poison and trust and a struggle to determine who can be trusted. It’s a quick read that will keep you wanting more and working your way to the back cover.
