Fortune Favors the Cruel by Lucinda Dark, Kel Carpenter

5.0

I had a great time reading FORTUNE FAVORS THE CRUEL. It’s exciting, filled with drama and action, moves at a good clip, is immersive, and everything I could ask for in an escapism book.

Quinn is a former slave who finds herself in a bargain with a powerful nobleman named Lazarus who will train her to control her power if she aids him with his ambitions.

Quinn and Lazarus are both morally grey and that makes them quite compelling. She is tenacious and unwilling to be cowed or controlled. He is driven and finds his will tested every time Quinn challenges him. I really, truly liked these characters and the depth they both got. Their motivations were clear and that added to the believability of their actions.

The world-building is easy to follow and the action is plentiful. The side characters are a delight and there are lots of questions I want to be answered. I really enjoyed the plot and the connections the characters had. The prose is also very, very well crafted and makes this an immersive read.

This is a great dark fantasy book with strong, morally grey characters, perfect for anyone looking to scratch that itch. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to continue with the series!
