Oh man, this book deals with the dark subject of abuse in an obtuse sort of way. As an adult reading the book I knew that her dad was abusive but I think it will take some kids longer to figure that out. I like that the author works the subject into the story with little instances, so that it isn't immediately obvious or scary. Eventually you know that he is abusive and that Rose is capable enough to deal with it.
I really enjoyed Rose's attitude towards magic and how useful it actually is. I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a great story.
