In this second book, we got more of Ana and Din's dynamic as master and assistant. We also got another absolutely intricate murder mystery to solve in a unique fantasy setting.
Din in this second book was having a bit of an inner conflict. In this second book, it has been 2 years since he started working as Ana's assistant. And he wasn't really fond of the work he was doing. Mostly because he didn't see the glory in his job as an investigator as opposed to if he's working as a Legionnaire/ soldier fighting leviathans. Secondly because he seemed to have grown attached to someone in the Legion. He resorted to some really questionable ways to feel better, something I'm not really a fan of. Thankfully, Ana correctly gleaned the issues Din was experiencing and talked to him about it (kinda).

"To serve is a tremendously humbling thing. How easy it is to mistake glory and fame for duty! But duty is thankless, invisible, forgettable— but oh, so very necessary." She smiled at me again. "You know that, of course. Long have I heard it said that the Iudex is the most thankless of all imperial services— yet without it, all my labors here would have come to naught."
I look forward to more of them in the next book to come. However, I do have to say I'm getting kind of impatient to know more about the mystery surrounding Ana Dolabra because so far, she seemed much more special than she lets on.
