The Two Lives of Lydia Bird
by Josie Silver
Overall I love this type of story. I could picture it being a movie for sure. The last 1/4 felt kind of fluffy to me, compared to the heaviness of the first 3/4. And I definitely expected a totally different ending most of the time, but the one that happened was also very predictable. I could have done without the random trip to Croatia; I felt like it didn’t serve much of a purpose and was a forced “enlightened” moment for the protagonist. Pros: good, romantic, sad story; great emotion-driven writing; realistic dialogue. Cons: slower toward the end; ending’s tone didn’t match the rest of the book; wanted more in final 1/4.
